The past 24 hours have brought truly fantastic sailing, covering 201 nautical miles. A new record!!! Yes, the current has certainly helped — but Akuna is proving once again what a remarkable boat she is, she’s loving these downwind conditions under spinnaker. We’ve been holding a steady 8–9 knots, with some crazy bursts of enthusiasm , and with the sea relatively calm, it’s all been surprisingly comfortable. So comfortable that we even had a hitchhiker for the day! A young Seagull decided to use our Sarpannels as rest-stop.
The highlight of the day was catching a beautiful Bigeye tuna, which was promptly transformed into fresh ceviche for dinner — served alongside pizza, no less. A memorable combination! Now we’re considering what delicious creation to make from the rest of it today.
Despite the dreamy sailing, the kids are beginning to feel a bit “boated out.” And honestly… we get it. Night watches lose their romance surprisingly fast. The idea of another three-week passage after our Galápagos break sounds slightly overwhelming to all of us. But as I keep telling the crew (and myself): one nautical mile at a time. Let’s arrive first. Future worries can wait their turn.
For now, we’ll savor the great speed, the gentle seas, and the breathtaking stars overhead.
And I already know this: the second the kids see their first sea lion — most likely draped dramatically across Akuna’s back step like it owns the place — all complaints will evaporate. Chaos, excitement, and pure joy will follow.
And yes… it will absolutely be worth it.
