into the big blue – day 20

Have I mentioned how incredibly blue the water is out here? Not just blue, but a deep, ink-like blue—yet still crystal clear. At first, I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me after so long without seeing much colour beyond the boat. But a bit of research proved otherwise. With very little plankton in these waters, the South Pacific is home to some of the clearest seas on Earth. Combined with the angle of the sun, it creates what can only be described as “the big blue.”

The day passed with frequent squalls and even a touch of thunder. Thankfully, going through it all in daylight makes it far more manageable. The wind picked up at times, settling steadily around 28–30 knots for a few hours—but at least that spared us from constant sail changes.

And now here we are: what should be our final night at sea, if all continues to go to plan. There are still heavy clouds rolling through with bursts of rain, but in between, the stars are simply breathtaking.

It’s hard to imagine what arrival will feel like—but we’re about to find out.

Excitement is definitely kicking in!!! And—maybe to your surprise —a tiny bit of sadness too. This whole experience has been pretty incredible as a family. Sure, it’s been tiring, exhausting, and occasionally “why are we doing this again?”—but also cosy, close, and weirdly wonderful.

When you remove all the usual distractions and your biggest daily decisions are “what do we eat?” and “which way are we sailing?”, you suddenly have a surprising amount of time to just… exist. Together. Turns out, that’s actually pretty nice.

I think the boys felt it too—and maybe even loved it.

If there’s one thing we’re taking back to land life, it’s this: we need more little pauses in our weeks. Moments where we stop, breathe, and just be – and be together … preferably without 30 knots of wind, but we’ll take what we can get.

But proper land life is still many adventures and days at sea away—for now, we’ll be shifting into exploration mode… and discovering what magic French Polynesia has in store for us.
