to Tonga – day3

The day has been slow once again, with the spinnaker doing most of the work. We also had to rely on the engine for a while until the wind shifted a little further south.

With the current wind angle, the Code 0 would have been the perfect sail, but we’re still making good progress under our white sails. Thankfully, the sea remains wonderfully comfortable.

If you’ve been following our tracker, you may have noticed that we headed quite a long way north before finally turning west—actually even a little south again. It wasn’t because we got lost; the detour helped us find a bit more wind.

Speaking of detours… after a lot of discussion and staring at calendars, we may have to change the title of these updates from “To Tonga” to “To Fiji.” A final decision will be made over the next day.

August is approaching far faster than we’d like, and Akuna needs needs a new home and carer. That means Tonga may have to wait for another adventure. I’d be genuinely disappointed because Tonga is such a special place, and I had been so looking forward to going back. But squeezing in just four rushed days there, while adding another day of sailing, feels a bit like driving three hours just to have a coffee before turning around again. Sometimes worth it… sometimes just a long drive.

We still have about ten sailing days between Fiji and Australia. On paper, that doesn’t sound too dramatic when it’s broken into three hops. In reality, though, there’s a whole floating household—and five lives—to move back to another continent afterwards. Apparently nobody invented a teleport button for sailors.

So yes… another dramatic sigh, another heartfelt “If only we had more time!” But we’re incredibly lucky to be here in the first place. We can’t see everything, but we can enjoy everything we do get to see.

Let’s see what tomorrow decides… hopefully with still calm seas and a little less adulting.
