The last night was just as wild as the one before. Luckily, Mark was fit enough to take a watch, so I managed to catch up on a little bit of sleep.
We spent the rest of the day doing our best to keep Akuna moving fast—which, in these conditions, wasn’t exactly difficult. Slowing her down sometimes felt like more of a challenge than keeping her going.
And so we zoomed through our final 100 nautical miles of the Pacific Ocean.
At 16:48 local time, we finally called: “Land ho!”
And, as if the ocean itself knew what this moment meant, a beautiful rainbow appeared above us.
A few hours later, at 23:15 local time on the 19th of August—one year and nine days after we left Italy—we finally tied Akuna up.
And just like that… we were there.
It’s difficult to put into words what is going on inside me right now. There is relief, exhaustion, happiness, sadness, disbelief, pride… and probably a thousand other emotions that will take a little while to catch up with me. So I won’t even try to describe them all in this post.
But I will tell you this:
I have the most incredible sailing crew one could possibly ask for. And my pride in these three little pirates, their captain and this boat we called home the last year, knows absolutely no bounds.
What the five of us have done together is something I still can’t quite believe. We crossed oceans, sailed through rough winds, pushed through exhaustion, navigated nights when the sea was anything but friendly—and somehow, through all of it, we kept going.
Together.
And now, after a year and nine days of moving, rocking, bouncing and occasionally wondering whether the ocean had finally had enough of us…
I’m going to put my head on a pillow that doesn’t move.
And maybe, just maybe, I’ll finally sleep.
Although knowing me, I’ll probably wake up wondering why the bed isn’t rocking anymore.
Goodnight, Pacific. I will be with you in my dreams…
You were one hell of an adventure.
And thank you, Akuna. ❤️
